Although it was created by Anna Jarvis in 1907, Mother’s Day as we know it didn’t become an official holiday in the United States until 1914, when President Woodrow Wilson decreed that the second Sunday in May shall be the day we honor mothers throughout the country.
Unfortunately, by the time of Jarvis’ death, she had spent her life savings railing against the modern incarnation of Mother’s Day – and the pre-printed greeting cards that inevitably replaced thoughtful, handwritten letters children used to write to honor their mothers on the holiday.
