Tips for Long Flights with Small Children
February 19th, 2010
Traveling with small children on long-haul flights can be very challenging at times. If you find yourself preparing for a long, international flight you may want to review the following tips which may make the trip a bit easier for you and your children.
1. Check with the airlines about their policy on traveling with small children so you will know what to expect and avoid any inconvenience in the trip. Find out if they allow car seats or infant seats. If you are traveling solo with one or more children, you may want to explore the option of requesting an Escort Pass to a person who can help you transport your carry-on bags and assist in getting the children to your departure gate.
2. Get to the airport early as different airports have different ways of checking in travelers with small children. You may be required to remove a child from a carrier or stroller as you go through the security check. Anticipate being delayed both at check-in and at the security screening. By arriving at the airport earlier than you would if you were traveling by yourself, you give yourself additional time to deal with these potential delays.
3. Ensure that your carry-on items comply with all TSA and airline regulations. Double check that you have all of the items necessary to care for your child (diapers, baby wipes, bottles, etc) and make sure they are properly packed.
4. If possible, purchase a seat for your child for your convenience and their comfort…especially on long flights. On a long flight, your child will be able to rest easier as well as allowing you to relax a little and possibly get some rest too. Many airlines charge only 50% of the normal fare for children under two years old.
5. Small children traveling on airplanes at times suffer discomfort due to change in cabin pressure. During take off and landing, the pressure build up in the ears that can be quite painful. Give your baby a bottle or a pacifier during take-offs and landings to alleviate the pressure.
Prior to a flight, make sure your infant or young child has had time to play and work off some energy. Flying time is perfect for nap time! Make sure to bring age-appropriate toys for them to play with too when they are awake. For toddlers, be sure to bring a couple of their favorite books, activity books, and other small toys they enjoy.
6. Ask the flight attendants where changing tables are located when it is time to change diapers. Most airlines have changing tables in the lavatory, but some airlines have changing tables elsewhere. Do not change diapers in your seat as a courtesy to the passengers around you.
7. Learn to relax while traveling with small children. The occasional cries of an infant or toddler may be irritating to some passengers, but most people are very tolerant and understanding.
One of the biggest things to remember during long flights (whether it’s a coast-to-coast flight in the US or a longer, international flight) is to be flexible with your child(ren). Don’t lose your temper with them. It’s a good idea with toddlers to discuss your flight with them prior to actually getting on to the airplane. Prepare them and help them understand what is going to happen before they get to the airport.
We hope that you will find these tips and suggestions useful when you prepare to fly with your children.
